Alopecia Areata and its relation to Hair Loss

Alopecia Areata is a disease that occurs due to a disorder in the immune system of human where the white blood cells in the immune system attack the patient’s hair follicles and destroys them without any known reason. This leads to some hairs becoming weak and falling out to cause bald patches on the head. These patches can typically show on different areas on the head. However, in some rare situations, the affected hair follicles are capable of returning back to normal if the immune system is strong enough to fight the reaction. In many cases, the hair re-grows typically after several months while in some cases, the hair loss becomes permanent. Treatments to promote hair re-growth can also work in some cases.

Symptoms and causes:

Alopecia Areata occurs due to psychological stress, tension and anxiety, social pressures, and so many other things. According to a last research in UK, scientists have found that genetic factors play an important role in the formation of alopecia, it was also found that the lack of zinc element in the human body can help in its formation as well. There are several different causes and patterns of alopecia:-

Alopecia Areata can occur at any age but most cases are usually found in teenagers and children. At least half of the people with alopecia areata develop their first patch of hair loss before they are 21. Males and females are equally affected. In rare cases, some people may experience more extensive hair loss. This is usually an indication of another type of alopecia, such as:

• alopecia totalis :- which is the loss of all the hair on the scalp, or

• alopecia universalis :- which is the loss of all the hair on the entire body.

The hair loss associated with alopecia areata is unpredictable and random. The hair may grow back at any time and then may fall out again. The extent of hair loss and regrowth varies greatly from person to person.

Treatment methods

There are two different treatment types doctors can use to get rid of this illness.

1. Medical treatment:

You can rub certain medications such as minoxidil into the scalp, that works when applied to the expansion of blood vessels in the scalp leading to hair re-growth in the empty areas. Vitamin pills can also reduce hair loss and re-grow the old hair if you use it on a long-term. Vitamins like biotin pills and extended grain of blood vessel pills can also help the patient to stop hair loss.

2. Surgical Treatment:

If you didn’t get any results after using the medications and vitamins, then you should resort to surgical treatment which means “hair transplant”. With the hair transplant procedure, you can make a good coverage to the patches which alopecia areata has made empty. The hair transplant surgery is the best solution if you want to restore your previous hair and get rid of baldness in general because the newly implanted hair never falls off.
